Summary Pakistan believes that the inauguration of the project is violation of the Indus Waters Treaty
ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal on Friday said that India’s 330 MW Kishanganga hydroelectric project is a violation of Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
In a statement issued on Friday, the foreign office spokesperson said, “Pakistan is seriously concerned about the inauguration of Kishenganga Hydroelectric Project (KHEP).”
"Pakistan believes that the inauguration of the project without the resolution of the dispute is tantamount to violation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT)," the statement said.
Dr Faisal said that despite several rounds of bilateral negotiations as well as mediations under the auspices of the World Bank (WB), India continued with the construction of the project.
“This intransigence on part of India clearly threatens the sanctity of the Treaty," he added.
The spokesman said: “Pakistan reiterates that as the custodian of the Treaty, World Bank must urge India to address to Pakistan s reservations on Kishenganga Hydroelectric Project (KHEP).”
